Touring guide
A 4x4 touring canopy setup is the difference between a ute that gets you there and a rig that lets you stay. Storage, power, water and recovery gear all have to live somewhere, survive corrugations and stay within what your vehicle can legally carry.
This guide covers what a good touring setup needs, how to choose the canopy underneath it, how Arcpoint's APX Core, Tour Lite and Overlander packages compare, and a seven-step plan to work through before you ask for a quote.
Everything here is based on the APX range: Australian-made aluminium canopies designed and built in Queensland, powder coated in-house and backed by the Arcpoint Dust & Waterproof Guarantee.
The fundamentals
Whatever you drive and wherever you're headed, the setups that work share four things.
Every kilogram in the canopy comes off your payload. Arcpoint builds in lightweight folded aluminium because it won't rust and, built the right way, is just as strong as steel, leaving more of your vehicle's payload for water, fuel and gear.
Dust is the enemy of touring gear. APX canopies use full-length weather seals, internal lock barriers and stainless steel lock strikers on every door, backed by the Arcpoint Dust & Waterproof Guarantee.
A flush-mount aluminium floor, shelving, drawers and a fixed fridge position mean nothing slides around on the track and nothing has to be unpacked to reach what's underneath it.
Power to run a fridge and lights, water you don't have to carry in the cab, and recovery gear you can reach without emptying the canopy. The further out you go, the more these matter.
Start with the platform
Arcpoint's APX Touring Packages are built on the two-door APX chassis mount canopy: 2.5mm flat aluminium body panels on a 3mm aluminium SHS subframe, mounted directly to the vehicle's chassis. With no separate tray underneath, it gives you the most enclosed space for the least weight, and a flush internal floor that makes fit-outs simpler.
A chassis mount is permanent. If you need an open tray between trips, Arcpoint's Lift-Off Packages use a different, removable mounting system on a tray. We compare the two in detail in Chassis Mount vs Lift-Off Canopy: Which Is Right for Your Ute?
Two chassis mount profiles are available. The standard APX canopy has a radius roof shape. The APX Tourer features a taller door opening without increasing the overall height of the canopy, providing improved access while maintaining the same overall height.
Ute canopy storage ideas
Good touring storage is about reaching what you need without unpacking what you don't. Pack heavy items low and towards the cab, keep daily-use gear at door height, and give everything a fixed home so it stays put on corrugations. Three APX storage pieces to plan around:
Shelving and drawers
A bench, a drawer and shelving in one unit, so tubs, cooking gear and tools each get their own level. Included in the Overlander package and available as an APX accessory add-on.
Fridge zone
An upright fridge on a mount with a protection barrier stays put on rough tracks. The APX Under Fridge Pull Out Bench adds a sliding level beneath it, so the space under the fridge works instead of collecting loose gear.
Pantry and underbody
A slide-out pantry brings food and cooking gear to the door instead of the back of the canopy. Pair it with the aluminium underbody rear pull-out drawer (Tour Lite and Overlander) for recovery gear and tools outside the main body.
Need a different layout? Arcpoint's Custom Storage Solutions cover drawer systems, shelving, tool storage, fridge slides and bespoke internal layouts, including fit-outs for existing canopies. Browse the add-ons in the APX canopy accessories range.
Ute canopy electrical setup
The electrical system decides how long you can stay put. Start with a list of what you'll run: a fridge, internal canopy lighting, device charging, maybe an inverter or a compressor. That list sets the battery capacity, the charging (alternator, solar or both) and the wiring the canopy needs.
Arcpoint offers standard electrical packages, from small systems that run a fridge and a couple of lights through to full off-grid, self-sufficient setups. Every customer's requirements go to Arcpoint's electrical partner, Michaels Electronics in Toowoomba, for a recommendation before a solution is offered, and custom packages are available on request.
Plan it at build time: wiring, switch panels and lighting are easier to integrate while the canopy is being fitted out, and the rack-ready roof rails give solar panels a mounting point from day one. Arcpoint sells and fits 12V and 24V packages, solar panels and internal canopy lighting, with brands including Redarc, Enerdrive and Victron Energy.
Go further, stay longer
Water is heavy and awkward, so carry it low. The 40L underbody poly water tank in the Tour Lite and Overlander packages sits beneath the canopy floor, and the APX lockable jerry can holder keeps extra fuel or water outside the body, secured and out of the way.
Recovery and roof gear needs a mount, not a corner of the floor. The Overlander's wall-mount adjustable spare wheel carrier and fold-down ladder keep a spare and roof access on the canopy, and the rack-ready strut channel roof rail system is the mounting point for roof accessories such as a platform, awning or rooftop tent. Confirm roof loads with Arcpoint for your build.
For the rest, Arcpoint sells and fits a full range of 4x4 accessories, from recovery boards and compressors to awnings, spotlights and UHF, with brands including TJM, ARB, MAXTRAX, Stedi and The Bush Company.
Three tiers, one foundation
All three APX Touring Packages are built on the same two-door APX chassis mount canopy, with the same aluminium construction, steel mounting system and Dust & Waterproof Guarantee. The difference is how far you want to take the setup.
2 door chassis mount
Essential. Reliable. Ready.
The foundation the other packages build on: a two-door chassis mount canopy with the touring essentials fitted, ready to evolve with your setup over time.

Seven-step checklist
Work through these seven steps before you request a quote and the conversation with Arcpoint will be about details, not basics.
Weekend trips with a fridge and a swag need a different setup to months of remote travel. Be honest about how often you'll go, how far off the bitumen, and how many people are coming.
Find your vehicle's GVM and current weight, then work out what's left for the canopy, fit-out, water, fuel, people and gear. Every part of the setup counts, so ask Arcpoint to check the planned build against your vehicle's ratings.
Decide what lives where: fridge position, shelving, drawers and pantry, plus what goes in the underbody drawer and toolboxes. Heavy items low and forward, daily-use items at the doors.
List everything you'll run and for how long. That sets the battery, charging and wiring. Arcpoint takes your requirements to Michaels Electronics for a recommendation, from a fridge-and-lights system to full off-grid.
Underbody water tank, jerry can holder, spare wheel carrier, ladder, awning and recovery gear. Give each one a mount so nothing lives loose on the floor.
Roof platform, solar panels, lighting, UHF, compressor and the rest. Fitting accessories while the canopy is being built is simpler than retrofitting them later.
Bring your vehicle details, your list and your travel plans. The Arcpoint team will confirm what fits, what the setup will carry, and whether Core, Tour Lite, Overlander or a custom fit-out is the right starting point.
Good to know
All three use the same two-door APX chassis mount canopy. Core includes the touring essentials. Tour Lite adds an aluminium underbody rear pull-out drawer and a 40L underbody poly water tank. Overlander adds a Bushman DC85-X HD 85L upright fridge with mount and protection barrier, the APX 4-tier storage unit, a wall-mount adjustable spare wheel carrier, lockable jerry can holder, fold-down ladder and central locking on both canopy doors.
Chassis mount. The canopy bolts directly to the vehicle's chassis as a permanent body. Arcpoint's Lift-Off Packages are a separate range that uses a different, removable mounting system on a tray.
It depends on the canopy, fit-out, water, fridge and gear, so there is no single figure. Lightweight folded aluminium keeps the base weight down, but the complete setup still needs to be checked against your vehicle's GVM and payload. Arcpoint can review your planned build and confirm the weight of the package you choose.
Yes. Arcpoint's Custom Storage Solutions include fit-outs for existing canopies, and electrical packages are available as standard or custom systems. Contact Arcpoint with your canopy details and what you want to run.
The standard APX canopy has a radius roof shape, and the Tourer canopy has the Tourer shape, made to suit the Tourer tray headboard. The APX Tourer features a taller door opening without increasing the overall height of the canopy.
Every package is quoted individually, because the vehicle, profile, colour, electrical and accessories all change the build. Use the quote form with your vehicle details and the package you're interested in. Finance is available through Credit One.
Designed and built in Queensland
A touring canopy setup that works is planned as a system: the canopy, the storage, the power, the water and the gear that hangs off it, all within what your vehicle can carry. Arcpoint builds that system in Australia, from folded aluminium, in three packages that start from the same foundation and grow with the way you travel.
